The Department

PaulingThe Chemistry Department consists of four qualified teachers assisted by a lab technician. There are between 70-80 students in each IGCSE year group and about 45-50 in each Advanced level year group. There are five specialist laboratories. It is one of three very successful science departments with examination results well above the UK national average. The courses followed are offered by Edexcel both at IGCSE and at A-level.

The Head of the Chemistry Department, Dr. Vart Alteparmakian graduated from London University with a BSc (Hons) degree and PhD in Synthetic Organometallic Chemistry. She has been a member of the department since 1994.

Dr. Mavrommatis graduated from Brunel University with a B.Tech (Hons) in Applied Chemistry and then obtained a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the Polytechnic of North London. He has been a member of the Chemistry Department since September 1984 and is also the Deputy Head Teacher. To reinforce his knowledge of School management, he obtained an MA in Educational Management from the University of Nottingham in 1999. Over the years he has taught at all levels in the department but currently specialises in the teaching of A Level to the 6th and 7th form.

Christopher Brown graduated from Keele University (UK) with a Joint BSc. Hons degree in Chemistry & Biology. He joined the Chemistry Department in September 2000 after teaching at the Falcon School (1996-2000). Since joining the English School, he has taught General Science, O-Level, IGCSE, AS & A2 level Chemistry. Aside from teaching, he is currently the Newham Housemaster and is actively involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme at Gold Level.

Dr. Sanjay Hurhangee graduated from Herzen Pedagogical University of St. Petersburg with an MSc and then obtained a PhD from St. Petersburg Technological Institute. He also obtained an MA in Educational Leadership from Nottingham University.
He has previously taught at the Melkonian Educational Institute (1994-2002) where he also served as Local Assistant Examiner for AS & A2 practicals (1994-2002) and as Head of Science (2000-2002) before joining the English School in 2002.
