The DOE started in 1956 in the UK and has developed over the years to its current form. It is a self-development programme that presents a challenge to young people in four main areas: skills, community service, physical recreation and adventurous journey. Participants in the scheme work towards reaching the required standards in the above areas in order to achieve the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. The English School has been offering "The Duke of Edinburgh's Award" to students since 1968 under its UK name, whereas the name used worldwide is "The International Award for Young People". The Award is currently in operation in over 110 countries in all regions of the world.
The DOE is currently offered to students in years 4-7 and is organised on an annual cycle. Students can work at their own pace taking advantage of the opportunities that are available to them. Those who fulfill the conditions of the scheme can progress to the next stage of the award. Students who take longer to reach the stipulated standards can complete their Award in the next cycle of the scheme.
Further information on the programme can be found on the International Award Association's website at: http://www.intaward.org.
The DOE is an activity that requires the participants to dedicate a considerable amount of time to it. Students are required to attend numerous meetings which are normally held at various times after school. On some occasions brief meetings are also scheduled during breaks. Meetings normally take place at agreed rooms around the school.
In addition to meetings there is also some individual and group work that needs to be accomplished by students in their own time.
The Community Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, Adventurous Journey Sections as well as the Residential Project requirement (Gold Award only) of the DOE need further time commitment, both after school and over weekends.
There is a dedicated team of teachers supporting the Award. For 2006-2007 it consists of Yiannos Papaioannou, Paul Maurer, Philip Georghiades, Chris Brown, Kypros Kashis, Nicoletta Stavrides, Maryenda Stefanou and Caroline Reynolds.
