The English Department

Introductory remarks:

The English Department is one of the main departments in the school. Its task is primarily to provide students with the communicative tools they need in order to become successful users of English at an advanced level. All students follow a course of studies in both English Language and English Literature until the 5th form when they sit for all IGCSE subjects. The underlying philosophy of the Department is that all students extend their proficiency in English (both orally and written) as well as to learn about the English language in a global context. Fundamental to this is the understanding and appreciation of all forms of Literature throughout their school life. All students complete courses in 1st Language English and English Literature and may select to follow A Level courses in English Literature and English Language (Linguistics).

The English Centre:

The English Department premises are currently located between the Headteacher's residence and the Radio Club.

There are four teaching rooms, one of which doubles up as a Video/DVD room. All teaching rooms have Internet connections. Two of the class rooms have been equipped with PC work stations and data projectors. Increasingly the Department is making use of ICT in its teaching and learning as it becomes embedded within the syllabus.
