Syllabus of Years 5 and 6 of primary schools

Working with integers up to a billion

Perception of numbers:

  • place value of a digit (million, billion)
  • prime and composite numbers
  • Highest Common Factor
  • Lowest Common Multiple
  • writing numbers, comparison of numbers, rank position - square numbers
  • powers of numbers (meaning, recognition, notation)

Operations with integers:

  • multiplying by a 3-digit number
  • dividing by a 2-digit number
  • evaluating sums, differences, products and quotients
  • properties of operations

Expressing a number as a product of its prime factors

 

Fractions

Concept of fractions:

  • part of a whole and part of a group of objects
  • fractions with common denominators or different denominators
  • (comparison and equivalence)
  • arranging fractions in ascending or descending order
  • mixed numbers
  • simplifying fractions
  • changing fractions into decimals

Operations with fractions:

  • addition and subtraction
  • multiplication and division

Decimals

Concept of decimals:

  • place value of a digit (tenths, hundredths, thousandths)
  • relation with fractions

Operations with decimals:

  • addition, subtraction
  • multiplication with an integer or a decimal
  • division by an integer
  • calculating a sum or a difference
  • rounding off decimals

Ratios, Proportions, Percentages

  • Concept of a ratio
  • Equal ratios
  • Proportional quantities
  • Finding a missing quantity
  • Use of ratios to solve problems
  • Cross-multiplication
  • Concept of a percentage
  • Relation with fractions and decimals
  • Finding the percentage of a quantity
  • Finding the original quantity given the percentage

Mensuration

  • Concepts: perimeter, area, capacity, weight, time
  • Area of a rectangle, square, parallelogram and triangle
  • Surface area of a cube, cuboid and pyramid
  • Volume of a cuboid, cube
  • Using the most appropriate unit of measurement for various quantities
  • Metric Units (cm, m, km, L, g, kg, cm², m², cm³)
  • Measuring time
    • hour, ½ hr, ? hr, min., second
    • use of a calendar (days, weeks, months, year, century)
  • Measuring angles
  • Using money in real life situations

Geometry

3-Dimensional shapes:

  • concept of a cube, cuboid, pyramid
  • recognising faces, edges, vertices
  • surface area
  • constructions using nets

Polygons (triangles, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, pentagons, hexagons, etc)

Types of triangles:

naming, classification, simple properties, constructions

Angles:

  • types of angles (right angle, acute, obtuse)
  • complementary and supplementary angles
  • construction, comparison
  • measuring angles.

Lines:

  • straight lines
  • line segments
  • parallel and intersecting lines
  • perpendicular lines

Circle:

  • construction
  • radius, diameter
  • circumference
  • area (approximation)

Line Symmetry :

  • construction of symmetrical shapes
  • completing a figure given the line of symmetry
  • collecting and tabulating data
  • construction

Co-ordinates

Arithmetic mean

Probability (simple activities)

  • recording results
  • drawing conclusions
  • making predictions

Solution of Problems

Steps in the solution of a problem

Strategies in the solution of a problem:

  • constructing a pattern using colours, shapes and numbers
  • making a plan
  • forming a table
  • choosing the appropriate operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • using the appropriate operation for the solution of problems
  • using logical thinking
  • estimating and checking
  • writing down the question to complete a problem

Problems using:

  • investigation
  • integers, fractions, decimals
