Major importance is attached to students fulfilling their maximum academic potential, and placement in the student's choice of University. The June 2008 External Examination results are proof of the students' level of excellence:
In 2006 a former student of the English School graduated from the School of Engineering at the University of Surrey with an Upper Second class BEng Honours Degree in Civil Engineering. The student was awarded The Atkins Prize for final year students who are judged to have completed BEng projects contributing most to the Civil Engineering profession.
In the June 2006 IGCSE Examination, an English School student was placed top in the world for her achievement in English Literature.
There has been a tremendous response of schools to World Maths Day which falls on March 14th every year.
March 14th is the birthday of Albert Einstein, 3.14 (the American way of writing the date), also happens to be the approximation we use for š, when we divide the circumference of any circle by its diameter!
The challenge for this year was to set a world record in answering 10 million mental arithmetic questions by pupils playing against each other in real-time battles of mental arithmetic through the internet.
Schools from 98 countries were registered for this international event. In the UK alone there were more than one thousand schools taking part. It proved to be an incredibly exciting event and the total number of questions answered actually came to 38 904 275.
The English School ranked 3rd worldwide as having the highest school contribution and Mr Nikandrou's class, 1W, are to be congratulated in coming 2nd in the world for highest class contribution.
We will remember this date next year and we are determined to try even harder to beat the 2 leading schools from Hong Kong!
We were extremely proud that in January 2008 an English school student was selected to represent the Eastern Mediterranean region at The Greenwich Forum in London. After a gruelling selection procedure, the student was selected from many applicants by The British Council. She participated in the Greenwich Forum, entitled Our future, our activism. Your challenge, in London from 13-18 January 2008. From this group of sixty young people, from fifty countries, a smaller group was then selected to take the group's agreed challenges for the world leaders to the leaders themselves in Davos, Switzerland at the World Economic Forum. It took place between 23-28 January 2008. Participation in the Forum is a very special opportunity. Well done!
