The new term has started well and 2010 is looking very positive at the English School. The strategic plan should be ready to share with parents by half term and we can then begin to get on with the job of implementing some of the improvements that many of you identified when we consulted you before Christmas. We are also finalising the new uniform proposals and some new admissions criteria for 2011 and 2012, details of which will be shared shortly.
Students and staff are braving the latest cold spell and we continue to open the school hall in the morning so that students can keep warm before lessons start. Punctuality week went well and hopefully our students are getting the message that both promptness and good attendance has a significantly positive impact on learning. So well done to all those students who set themselves the new year resolution of getting to school on time! We have seen a big improvement which we must sustain.
The deadline for university entry in the UK has now passed and many offers are coming in for our students from the most selective universities. I would like to offer my personal congratulations to the 5 students who this year have had offers from Oxbridge. A more detailed report on their success will be in the next edition of The Canon and on our website soon. Getting offers this year is a great achievement as the number of available places in UK universities has been reduced due to funding pressures and the number of applicants has risen drastically due to the current economic crisis. This shows us what talented and able young people we have at the English School and we are truly proud of them. Now all they have to do is to sustain their hard work and commitment to get the grades required in the summer.
Finally I would like to thank the parents for their continued support for the important work we are doing here at the school to make your child’s educational experience even more enjoyable and fruitful.

During periods of atmospheric dust, all students who belong to the 'at risk' health groups e.g. with asthma, other respiratory problems, heart problems or allergies, may stay indoors at break time. They can go to the hall or inside the Lloyds or Science buildings. They may also be temporarily excused from participating in outside Games and PE activities upon the production of a letter from parents. If any students feel unwell or have difficulties in breathing they should report immediately to the school nurse.
Thank you,
Deborah Duncan

The presentation will be given on Wednesday, 10th March at 1.00 pm, by a representative from the United States Embassy accompanied by one from the Fulbright Commission, and should prove very informative for those students thinking of studying in the United States.
The presentation is open to all students and parents and will prove especially useful to Year 5 and 6 students who will be preparing for the next step in their educational process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
The school is continually looking to improve the communication it has with parents/guardians. In order to do this the school needs an e-mail address for each parent or guardian. The system was piloted with Year 4 parents and is now extended to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th Years.
