The English Institute
The English Institute has been operating on the premises and under the guidance of the English School in Nicosia since 1968. Its prime objective has always been to enrich its students’ educational background with language skills that will prove to be a great asset.
Experience has taught us a great deal: how to choose our teachers, how to create an ideal learning environment, and how to prepare our students for examinations - with excellent results.
Creating the ideal environment
Education is not only about books, tests and homework. It is about creating a motivating yet stress-free environment that will enhance the capacity to learn. Classes are held in the beautiful setting of the English School grounds. With a small number of students in each class, our teachers can introduce modern teaching tools and techniques that are both fun and effective.
English for all
Students in the 1st or 2nd grade of primary school can join a one-year Preliminary English course (Pre-1) FREE OF CHARGE.
In the Pre-1 class, students will be introduced to the English Language in a way that will be both enjoyable and motivating. Well trained and experienced teachers will make good use of technology. Learning is emphasised through games, songs, fairy tales and creative activities. They will speak, listen and recognise letters and words.
Our aim is to gently introduce the children to afternoon activities and prepare students for the English 1 level where they will follow a well structured syllabus with equal emphasis on all four skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing.
The strong foundations laid at the elementary level will enable our pupils to take their first external Cambridge Young Learners examinations. Preparing for and taking these external examinations will not only be challenging and motivating but very useful too when taking the Cambridge KET, PET, FCE and IGCSE later on (see timetable below).
With us your children will be taught to communicate effectively in English, and obtain valid qualifications that are recognised by British and European Universities. FCE and IGCSE are also recognised in Cyprus (Civil Service, Banks, etc.) for employment purposes.
IGCSE Results
Owing to the hard work of both our teachers and students the IGCSE examination results for May 2012 were excellent: 88% pass rate
(Note: the percentage pass rate given above includes only the top grades of A, B and C)
Timetable and External Exams
Progress reports are issued twice a year, and teachers and department heads and the Head Teacher are available for individual meetings by appointment. Students are prepared for the Cambridge examinations as shown below:

Depending on demand, classes may be formed to prepare students for the Cambridge Proficiency in English or IELTS examinations.
English for native speakers
The Institute also offers classes for native speakers of English who attend Greek primary schools. These classes are uniquely designed for children who have attended an English nursery, lived abroad and/or speak English at home. Currently there are 6 levels in the programme, beginning with NSP for students who will be attending Pre-Demotiko. NSP meets only once a week for 55 minutes, whereas NS1 - NS5 have lessons twice a week for 85 minutes. The NSP lessons are offered free of charge. All instruction in our Native Speaker programme is exclusively in English using books from the UK. Our classes focus on developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, connecting with the National Literacy Strategy in England. The NS teachers are all native speakers themselves and are highly qualified and experienced educators. From learning how to write the alphabet to writing complex compositions students are encouraged and progressively challenged in a supportive environment throughout our Native Speaker programme.
