Research says that school uniform improves discipline, raises standards and reduces peer pressure and bullying. Uniform can instil a sense of identity, community and pride in school among pupils. The English School Uniform has not been changed in more than ten years and we believe that it is time for a makeover.

A group of about fifteen students have taken on the challenge of carrying out a uniform review. With the guidance of Mrs Duncan and the support of Ms Reynolds, the team are tackling the review as if it were a business project. The objective is for students to be comfortable, to look smart and to feel proud to belong to the English School community. The uniform should be affordable, sensitive to the needs of different groups of students and appropriate for its use. We believe that English School students should look and feel like successful achievers and responsible citizens.

The team is trying to develop a uniform that pleases the majority of each of the main stakeholders. These stakeholders include staff, parents, the Board of Management and of course, the students, who will be wearing the uniform every day for up to seven years of their life!

So far the school has been visited by three different uniform suppliers and a number of ideas are being looked at. The team will be carrying out research over the next few weeks to get an idea of everyone’s general preferences and a survey will then be disseminated to all stakeholders. The team will then work with the chosen supplier to create a uniform that we hope the students will be proud to wear.

We are proud to announce that our school has for the second consecutive year excelled in the European Youth Parliament (EYP) National Session. Our school has been selected to represent Cyprus in the International Session which will be held in Oslo next spring.

Our school was selected from 14 schools from all over Cyprus which took part in this year’s National Session.

Our team of seven pupils ( Mimi Kyprianou 6G,Maria Nectaria Antoniou 5W,Christine Shahbenderian 6W, Chloe Orphanides 6Y, Nuriye Bey 6W, Marilia Paraschou 6J, Antonis Stylianou 6B ) was formed following a rigorous selection process and have proved to be extremely gifted in a variety of skills including debate and presentation.

About 30 students attended a workshop last April on EU institutions and policies organized in cooperation with the EU Representation in Cyprus. Following interviews and a written test, seven of them were selected to represent the school.

The team was thoroughly prepared in 10 summer meetings by our able and committed staff led by Mrs Katia Solomidou. The teachers were involved in teambuilding activities with other staff from the participating schools and had one afternoon’s workshop on the topic of changes to the national curriculum in order to combat racism and xenophobia. The students addressed such topics as EU Policy on swine flu, religion in the National curriculum, sex education in the National curriculum, the current economic crisis and solar energy .They also learned about the workings of the National Session and the General Assembly.

We will follow the progress of our students in Oslo with much pride and interest.

It's time for Talent Night once again at The English School and this is one concert not to be missed. As always, there were many entries and our 30 judges had a difficult time deciding since only 22 items could be chosen. This year there are many new faces, and the result will be a show full of variety, from break dancing to ballads, rock 'n' roll to Moroccan Roll!

The concert will take place at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd November at 8.00 p.m. Tickets are £6.00, obtainable in advance from the Music Department any second break. We remind you that tickets are numbered, and will be sold on a first come first served basis.

Greek Play 2007

Τελικά η δολοφόνος δεν ήταν μία, δεν ήταν δύο, ήταν τρεις! Και το θύμα ήταν πάντα ένα: εγώ! Αν δεν είναι αυτό αδικία πέστε μου τι είναι; Το μόνο μου με παρηγορεί είναι ότι ολόκληρο το σχολείο προσπαθούσε για μία και πλέον βδομάδα να ανακαλύψει τη δολοφόνο μου και αυτό με συγκίνησε ιδιαίτερα! Και για όσους δεν έτυχε να γίνουν αυτόπτες μάρτυρες της δολοφονίας μου θα σας την περιγράψω τηλεγραφικά, τηλεγραφικότατα μπορώ να πω: Μαχαίρι, 19-21 Απριλίου 2007, Γυναίκα! ...

Ο Όμιλος Ποίησης και Λογοτεχνίας της Αγγλικής Σχολής Λευκωσίας σας προσκαλεί στην ετήσια καλλιτεχνική του βραδιά που φέτος θα διεξαχθεί τη Δευτέρα 14 Μαϊου και ώρα 6.30 μ.μ. στην Αίθουσα Τελετών της Σχολής. Θέμα της φετινής εκδήλωσης θα είναι «Η συνύπαρξη ποίησης και τέχνης στην κοινωνία του σήμερα.» Επίτιμος προσκεκλημένος μας θα είναι για φέτος ο Δρ. Βάσος Λυσσαρίδης ο οποίος θα αναφερθεί στην πορεία του ως ποιητής και ζωγράφος, με αφορμή την πρόσφατη έκθεση των έργων του στις Βρυξέλλες. Θα ακολουθήσει μουσικό καλλιτεχνικό πρόγραμμα με το συνθέτη Μάριο Μελετίου και μαθητές του σχολείου σε ένα πλούσιο ρεπερτόριο από την έντεχνη μουσική λαϊκή σκηνή. Κατά τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης θα γίνει η βράβευση των μαθητών που διακρίθηκαν στο φετινό Λιπέρτειο Διαγωνισμό Ποίησης, ενώ οι ίδιοι οι μαθητές θα παρουσιάσουν ενώπιον του κοινού τα ποιήματά τους. Η παρουσία σας θα είναι για μας ιδιαίτερη τιμή.

ΛΙΠΕΡΤΕΙΟΣ ΠΟΙΗΤΙΚΟΣ ΔΙΑΓΩΝΙΣΜΟΣ 2006-2007

Αποτελέσματα:

Ο Όμιλος Ποίηση ς και Λογοτεχνίας της Αγγλικής Σχολής ανακοινώνει τα αποτελέσματα του φετινού Λιπέρτειου διαγωνισμού ποίησης που διεξήχθη ανάμεσα στους μαθητές της Σχολής.

Η κριτική επιτροπή αποτελείτο από τους αξιόλογους λογοτέχνες κα Μαρία Πυλιώτη, κα Μαρούλλα Παίκου και τους κους Παύλο Παρασκευά, Νέαρχο Γεωργιάδη και Κώστα Χαραλαμπίδη.

Η κριτική επιτροπή συνήλθε σε συνεδρία για την έκδοση των αποτελεσμάτων στις 19 Απριλίου 2007. Αφού μελέτησε τα ποιήματα των μαθητών με ιδιαίτερη προσοχή και ενδιαφέρον, με αντικειμενικότητα, ευσυνειδησία και αγάπη για τους νεαρούς ποιητές, κατέληξε στα ακόλουθα αποτελέσματα. Φέτος η επιτροπή εξέτασε τα ποιήματα ως μία ομάδα.

Σταύρο Σταύρου (7Y) για το σύνολο των ποιημάτων του με ιδιάιτερη μνεία στο
ποίημα "Φερετζές". Οι άλλοι τίτλοι των ποιημάτων του "Όσα δεν έγραψε η ζωή" και
"Ζωή".
Χλόη Κοιλιάρη (4Y) για το σύνολο των ποιημάτων της με ιδιαίτερη μνεία στο ποίημα
"Πωλείται". Τίτλοι των άλλων ποιημάτων της "Χρυσές μέρες", "Το ταξίδι μας".

Βο Βραβείο

Απονέμεται απο κοινού στους:

Λεωνίδα Αριστοδήμου (5R) για το σύνολο των ποιημάτων του "Λαβύρινθοι απο
αγάπη", "Κερύνια της Λευτεριάς", "Η συνάντηση".

Απονέμεται στη Νάνσυ Χατζηευαγγέλου (7G) για το σύνολο των ποιημάτων της. Τίτλοι των ποιημάτων της "Μια άλλη διάσταση", "Πίνακας" και "Ξαφνικός θάνατος".

Έπαινος δόθηκε στους

Νάγια Παράσχου (1Β) για το ποίημα "Το παλιό μου σχολείο"
Αλέξανδρο Χρονίδη (1W) για τα ποιήματα "Αμμόχωστος" και "Κύπρο"

Η επιτροπή συγχαίρει όλα τα παιδιά που έλαβαν μέρος φέτος στο διαγωνισμό τονίζοντας το γεγονός ότι έγραψαν και γράφουν αξιόλογη ποίηση που αξίζει ιδιαίτερης προσοχής. Επαίνεσαν τον Όμιλο Ποίησης και Λογοτεχνίας για το έργο που επιτελεί προωθώντας τα παιδιά να γραφουν ποίηση κάτι όχι τόσο εύκολο αλλά όμως σημαντικό για μία ποιοτική ζωή.

Ευχαριστώ ιδιαίτερα την κριτική επιτροπή και συγχαίρω τα παιδιά για τη διάκρισή τους.

School Musical - South Pacific

On Wednesday 14th, Thursday 15th and Friday 16th February 2007, the School Hall was transformed into a tropical paradise for this year's musical extravaganza "South Pacific". After three dress rehearsals the cast was anxious to perform in front of an audience. Valentine's Day celebrations did not deter couples and "singletons" alike from attending this tale of love, written by Rodgers and Hammerstein which featured students from the 4th to 7th form.

The male chorus sang "There is nothing Like a dame" to rapturous applause, Bloody Mary (played by Christina Neophytou) brought the house down with her comic "stingy bastard - you like, you buy?" and not a dry eye remained as Emile de Beque (Marinos Koulouroudias) and Nellie (Argyro Nicolaou) embraced for "Some enchanted evening". Students such as Simon Mercouris (Luther Billis) made their debut (and unfortunately last) appearance on stage, and all, including the chorus, live band, backstage and sound crew had an experience to remember. Despite initial "why did you chose this play Kiria?", more than half a decade after its premiere, South Pacific won the hearts of our school community. The only question now is: "what are we doing next year?"
