RE: Option clarification for AS Economics/Business Studies
I am writing to you to explain the requirements set by the Department of Economics and Business Studies for those students in Year 5 that would like to start AS Economics and/or Business Studies next year. This was deemed necessary as a result of a number of queries by parents of students in Year 5 who were unsure about the conditions of entry into the subject.
As it was stated in the parents' and students' option guide booklet, it is highly recommended that students who opt for AS Economics and or Business Studies have studied Economics at IGCSE. This is not to say, however, that students who have not done IGCSE Economics will not be able to cope with the demands of the course and also perform well. On the contrary, in the past many of our very best results came from students that had no previous background knowledge in the subject. Therefore, it is still possible for able, non-IGCSE students to opt for AS Economics/Business Studies without compromising their performance at this level. This especially applies to students who have opted for the three sciences at GCSE level and have not had the opportunity to study Economics at IGCSE.
