Sports

Sports have always been highly emphasized at The English School since its founding in 1900 in order to develop team ethic as well as competitive spirit in the student population.

There is a House system which organizes both competitive and non-competitive sporting activities.  The Houses are divided into four groups, namely:

Newham (Light Blue) - named after the Rev. Canon Frank Darvall Newham, the School's founder and its Head Teacher from 1900 until 1936.

Wolseley (Red) - named after Lord Garnet Joseph Wolseley, who was promoted to General for distinguished military service in the field in Ireland, India, Egypt, the Crimea, Sudan and the Suez, and then raised to the peerage as Baron Wolseley.  Appointed in 1878 as the first British High Commissioner to Cyprus when the British took possession of Cyprus from Turkey.

Beaconsfield (Yellow) - named after the Earl of Beaconsfield, one of the most important British political leaders of the 1800's.  Better known as Benjamin Disraeli, the Earl of Beaconsfield was twice Prime Minister of Great Britain.  As Prime Minister he introduced important changes, such as the Reform Bill which gave votes to more of the working class, and improved living conditions in Britain.  His foreign policy included purchasing a large interest in the Suez canal, and acquiring Cyprus from Turkey in 1878.

Kitchener (Dark Blue) - named after Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener, described as one of the most famous men in modern British history whose career and activities included being a diplomat, negotiator, field marshal, War Minister, archaeologist, linguist and skilled cartographer, during some of the most action filled decades in the military and political history of the British Empire.  Lord Kitchener was sent to Cyprus just after 1878 and spent three years producing the first modern and scientifically prepared map of Cyprus.  He was also the Director and organiser of the newly-established Cyprus Land Registry Office.

The more sports-orientated are encouraged to play in House and School competitions in football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, softball, athletics, tennis and cross country; less able students participate in the same sports for enjoyment and fitness.  All the major sports are coached by an experienced team of Physical Education teachers.  This has led to excellent achievements in Pancyprian sporting competitions as well as the Dubai Football Tournament, to name but two.  There are also a number of traditional sporting events such as the Annual Games and Shield Sports with the American Academy of Larnaca which date back to 1908, and the Founders Day Games with the participation of former graduates of the School.

The School has excellent facilities: a sports hall, an Astroturf all-weather hockey pitch, two football pitches, a running track and many tennis and basketball courts.
