Turkish Department - Introduction

The Turkish Department is an integral part of the English School. The basic goal of the Department is to educate the Turkish Cypriot students to use their mother tongue in the right way, to enable them to understand, interpret and narrate what they read and bring them up as productive, thinking and questioning individuals. The Department also prepares the students for GCE Turkish Examinations at O, AS and A levels.

There is an undeniable link between language and thinking. Even when knowledge is read or heard in English, still our way of thinking is shaped by our mother tongues. A person, who spends all his life after the age of 12 in a foreign country and gets educated there, continues thinking in the way of his mother tongue and even dreams in that language. He may be speaking and discussing in the language of the foreign country he is living in but still the "deep thinking" takes place in the mother tongue. The Turkish Department is basing its curriculum on this fact.
