Induction Day 2017
Welcoming all our Year 1 and Mid-Programme Entry Students!
It is wonderful to see all these keen learners joining our school today. This is a very important day for your child and I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to The English School Community.
The students have already been introduced to some members of the Senior Leadership Team and their Head of Year. They have been allocated to their form group and met their Form Tutor. Year 1 students have met all their classmates and other Years have met their peer mentors. Lessons begin on Wednesday 13th September and all new students will meet all their classmates. New students have a lot of questions to ask; this is great and we do encourage them to ask them. Some students have been around this morning acting as “guides” to the new students; they have answered many questions and have been kind enough to escort them on an orientation walk round the school. Please refer to the Welcome Guide which gives a lot of important information about the way our School functions.
As a school we will do our best to keep parents informed of all important details related to their child. At the same time the school would like parents to pass on to us any information about their children which could help us to work more efficiently towards their development. Please email/write to the Form Tutor to inform and explain about absences/requests for permission for missing school for important reasons. Communication is a key to successful education. The first point of contact is always the Form Tutor. Please email Form Tutors to pass on necessary information . Parents and guardians have a key role in monitoring the Student Handbook. Most importantly it is expected that parents will encourage their children to keep the handbook clean and up to date, support the habit of completing homework in an organized and efficient manner. If at any time you need to see any individual member of staff, please send them an email to arrange an appointment.
Through our Pastoral, PSHCE programmes and the theme discussions/activities that take place during Form Tutor time or during Assemblies, we aim at helping students to develop an awareness of feelings, attitudes and values of themselves and others as well as an awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses. We also aim at helping our young people to gain confidence in themselves. They learn to show respect for the differences between people and they develop personal well-being and self-esteem which will help them to become autonomous members of our society. Students who feel positive about themselves are more likely to be independent, better socially adjusted and academically successful. Two of the greatest gifts we (parents and school) can give a developing child/young adult are positive self-esteem and self-confidence.
We would like to share with you the messages in the following poem:
If I had my child to raise all over again,
I’d finger-paint more and point the finger less.
I’d do less correcting and more connecting;
I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes
I would care to know less and know to care more.
I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.
I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I’d run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I’d do more hugging and less tugging.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I’d teach less about the love of power,
And more about the power of love.
(From the book, Full Esteem Ahead, 100 ways to Build Self-Esteem in Children and Adults.)
Let’s work together in a spirit of partnership with a common GOAL: Your child’s well-being, development, achievement and happiness.
