The Magic Touch, the school’s current Comenius partnership project has successfully been completed with
the students of the seven schools involved preparing a play based on their own script adapted from a fairy
tale. The final performance took place on the 12th of April and 6 of our Comenius fourth form students went
to Rome in order to act the last of the seven parts of the play on stage.
This event, which marked the culmination of all the efforts and creative work of the last two years, was
streamed live to all the seven countries giving students the opportunity to watch the performance in their re-
spective schools.
On the whole seven Comenius meetings were organized in the respective countries during these two years
and 32 mobilities took place from our school under the guidance of 6 teachers. In this way students bene-
fited not only by contributing creatively to the project, but also by discovering new countries, learning about
different school systems and living with families. They developed regular communication with their Euro-
pean peers and broadened their view of their European identity.
Parents’ support and sponsorship was a vital injection which increased opportunities for more students to take
benefit of the project.
More information is available on the blog created for this project. http://esthemagictouch.wordpress.com/
The school has applied for a new Comenius partnership for the years 2013-2015. It will deal with football
and sports. Seven partner schools will be involved if the project is approved in July: Germany, Poland, Turkey,
Finland, Spain, Portugal and Cyprus.
Another project in which we hope to be involved as from next year is a major Comenius partnership with
the following partners:
P1 Hypermedia Ltd (CY)
P2 University of the Aegean (GR)
P3 University of the Basque Country (ES)
P4 University of Westminster (UK)
P5 Union of Associations Multikultura (PO)
P6 The English School Nicosia
P7 Hellenic Open University (GR)
Use of technology on school trips so as to enhance learning combined with games. This will be the objec-
tive of the proposed project.

A competition for the examination of the command of the Ancient Greek literature and language was or-
ganised by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture for the first time among Cypriot students of all
schools, both public and private, of Year 5. Previously the competition was a Pan-Hellenic one.
The set text was Isocrates’ oratorical work “To Nicocles”, the famous king of the ancient Salamis in Cyprus.
The students were tested on both the commentary of the specific text and the language, grammar, syntax and
vocabulary of Classical Greek.
Three Year 5 Classical Greek students of the English School participated in the competition, the results of
which have not yet been announced.
The names of the students are the following:
Maria Aristotelous
Demetrios Constantinou
Charalambos Roussos
They were prepared for the competition through extra lessons, as the prescribed text is not included in their
GCSE syllabus. The students deserve to be commended for the diligence and enthusiasm they showed dur-
ing the preparation, despite their heavy schedule for preparation of English exams, but especially for their
courage to attempt participation in a completely new competition and to compete with their fellow students
from all over Cyprus. Throughout the whole process, they have gained knowledge, co-operation skills and
team spirit and definitely the high esteem of their teachers and peers.

The Charity Hikers, consisting of a vast number of 5 students plus Mr Maurer, hiked a total of approximately
16 km, in an effort to raise money for charity. The money raised from sponsorships was used to buy 314 pack-
ets of spaghetti and 49 boxes of cereal - given to poor families in Cyprus by the Metropolitan Bishop of Kyre-
nia.
These hikers faced their expedition with such zest that two of them, Nikolas Yiakoumis (aka Boy scout) and
Constantinos Melis willingly hiked an additional mountain in a challenge to break a record. They managed to
complete this challenge in 30 minutes, whereas the previous record had been 45(!)
Overall, this was an opportunity for the four students to gain yet another valuable hiking experience, for Bar-
bara to be initiated into the mystic world of camping and for Mr Maurer to reconsider his route plans and pon-
der over the question of whether we were being too optimistic trying to go up a particular mountain or not.
The fact that the expedition acted as a charity event at the same time meant that they had the chance to help
the community as well as enjoy the hiking experience.
