News from the Greek Department
The Greek Creative Writing Club
went at Lefkara for a weekend on
the 14th of December and fifteen
students enjoyed the hospitality of
local people and participated in
Creative Writing workshops. On
Saturday evening treasure hunt-
ing was organised and the aim
was for the teams to find the hid-
den words and match them in
order to re-create a verse from
well known poems. We then cre-
ated posters using pictures from
magazines and the evening ended with an excellent dinner! A sunny
Sunday allowed us to walk in the picturesque Lefkara and after
drinking a hot chocolate we had some exciting workshops and we
had the chance to write SMS poems using our mobile phones for
something creative. We had a great time and we will certainly repeat
it next year!

The Grammar School, Nicosia, the European University of Cyprus,
the Monday University and the Ministry of Education and Culture
organized a Literature Day: Dialogue with Writers, for students of
Private Secondary Schools (of seven academic years), as well as State
Secondary Schools of the Nicosia District, on Monday, 27th January
2013, at the Cultural Centre of the European University. Our school
participated with a group of ten students who had a unique oppor-
tunity to come in contact with distinguished writers and be able to
discuss with them. This kind of activity strengthens their personality
and enables them to develop a better understanding of literature.
lECTURE oN IMMIGRATIoN
On Friday, the 21st of March, four groups of year 2 had the opportu-
nity to attend a lecture from a representative from the Cyprus Om-
budsman office, Ms Thekla Demetriadou. This event was within the
framework of Year 2 Greek lessons. Our general topic was migration,
but during the discussion Mrs Thekla expanded on migrant workers,
Greek migrants in foreign countries, racism and difficulties faced by
migrants and made clear some definitions. Students got to express
themselves and asked questions about house keepers, the benefits
of migration to the host country and the criteria according to which
migrants are deported from Cyprus. We found this very helpful as it
helped us to get some things clear in our minds and we had the
unique opportunity to express our views and develop a better un-
derstanding of this very sensitive issue.

partment’s selection of love poems included samples from Classical
Greek Poetry, Poetry in Cyprus Dialect and Modern Greek Poetry.
Parents and students listened to poems in their original version and
they had the chance to read their English translation.

Watching theatre is one of the aims of the Greek Department and
this term we had the chance to host the Suitcase Theatre of THOK.
Year 1 students enjoyed a modern adaption of Shakespeare's mas-

transforming in an amazing way gave an excellent performance
