Year 1 Parents’ Workshop: Active Learning and Developing Confident Learners

The English School was delighted to welcome Year 1 parents and guardians to an informative workshop entitled “Active Learning – Developing Confident Learners”, held in the School Hall on 22 October.

The session was led by Ms Leonie Hadjithoma, Head of Year 1 and Teaching and Learning Committee member, Ms Marilena Neokleous, Assistant Head of Department and Teaching and Learning Committee member, and Ms Maria Papachristodoulou, School Counsellor and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.

The workshop explored practical ways parents can support their children as they transition into secondary school, helping them develop effective study habits, greater independence, resilience and confidence in their learning.  A key focus was active learning, with parents introduced to effective revision techniques and practical strategies for establishing positive homework routines, minimising distractions and encouraging students to take greater responsibility for their learning.

The session also highlighted the value of developing a growth mindset, encouraging students to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes and recognise that progress comes through effort, effective strategies and perseverance. The workshop reinforced the importance of a strong partnership between home and School in supporting students’ academic progress and personal wellbeing.

A warm thank you to all parents and guardians who attended, and to our colleagues for sharing their knowledge and practical advice.

Rebetiko Night – A Tribute to Vassilis Tsitsanis

The English School Greek Department hosted a truly memorable Rebetiko Night, dedicated to the legendary Vassilis Tsitsanis, bringing together students, parents, teachers and friends of our School community for a special celebration of Greek music and culture.

The School Hall came alive with beautiful melodies, lively student performances, singing and dancing, as guests embraced the spirit of rebetiko and enjoyed the warm, vibrant atmosphere. Traditional rebetiko meze added an authentic touch, recreating the charm of a Greek ouzeri during the Second World War. Inspired by the film Ouzeri Tsitsanis, studied as part of the A Level Greek syllabus, the event beautifully brought together education, history, music and tradition.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to making the evening so special! Special thanks to our talented students, dedicated teachers and the Greek Department for organising such a memorable event.

Erasmus Days 2026 at The English School: Learning and Growing – Skills for Tomorrow

The English School proudly celebrated the 10th anniversary of Erasmus Days from 12–17 October 2026  with a week of engaging activities, interactive workshops, student-led initiatives and exhibitions inspired by this year’s theme, “Learning and Growing: Skills for Tomorrow.”

The celebrations highlighted the importance of developing essential skills such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, leadership, digital literacy and environmental responsibility, while showcasing the positive impact of Erasmus+ on our School community.

AI and Critical Thinking: One of the highlights was an interactive workshop, “AI: Think Before You Trust,” delivered by Chrysovalanti Christoforidou. Students explored AI-generated information, questioned its accuracy and learned the importance of evaluating sources and making informed decisions rather than accepting AI responses at face value.

Students Supporting Students: Our Year 7 students visited Year 5 PSHCE classes to share practical advice on effective study habits, time management, examination preparation and maintaining a healthy balance between academic responsibilities and personal wellbeing. The initiative encouraged peer mentoring while strengthening leadership, communication and collaboration skills.

Teamwork and Sustainability: Year 1 students participated in engaging team-building activities inspired by Erasmus+ professional development, focusing on communication, empathy, problem-solving and building positive relationships.  Students also took part in a Sustainability Poster Competition, using creativity to raise awareness of waste reduction and environmental responsibility.

Sharing Knowledge Across Europe: Erasmus Days also provided an opportunity for teachers to share knowledge and innovative practices gained through professional development across Europe. Dr Catherine Panayiotou, Head of Biology, shared insights from an Erasmus+ course on Gifted Learners in Croatia, exploring approaches to supporting gifted students and promoting their academic and personal development.

Erasmus+ at The English School Open Day: A special Erasmus+ exhibition at our Open Day on 15 October showcased the School’s European partnerships, student exchanges and staff mobility experiences. Through photographs, interactive activities and personal reflections, visitors discovered how Erasmus+ creates opportunities for cultural exchange, personal growth and international collaboration. Members of our Erasmus+ Club also contributed to the exhibition, sharing their experiences and enthusiasm with visitors.

Learning Beyond Borders: The week’s celebrations demonstrated that Erasmus+ is about much more than travelling abroad. It is about bringing new perspectives into our classrooms, sharing knowledge, building connections and creating meaningful learning opportunities for students and teachers alike.

A warm thank you to all students, teachers and colleagues who contributed to making Erasmus Days 2026 a memorable celebration of learning, creativity and collaboration.

Erasmus+ – Enriching lives, opening minds.
