Students of the School, both on campus and at home took part in the bi-annual Eratosthenes experiment.

Using a simple technique, trigonometry and sharing our experimental data with Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique, we managed to calculate a value for the circumference of the Earth.

It was great to be able to include data from our lower school students who are currently distance learning at home and it made all the difference!

The experiment on conducted on 22nd March, at local noon both in Maputo, Mozambique and Nicosia Cyprus. We contacted Eduardo Mondlane University on the other side of the equator in the capital of Mozambique, as they share a similar longitude to The English School and they joined us as part of the project http://eratosthenes.ea.gr/ to perform the experiment and share data.

Our results are the best yet! We calculated a circumference of 40500 km, only a 1.8% difference to the accepted average value of the circumference of the Earth measured with satellite technology.

The Astronomy Club will carry out the experiment again around September 23rd on the Autumnal Equinox and we will attempt to share data with more schools on our longitude.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Ms Katie Demetriou or any member of the Astronomy Club.
