Yiannakis Theodorou memorial event
On the 29th January, we were very honoured to welcome to our School Mr Doros Theodorou, a 1986 graduate who was a third-generation member of his family to have strong links to The English School.
The occasion was held to honour both Mr Theodorou’s father and grandfather and is marked with a plaque outside Newham building. The event was joined by the Headmaster, staff, alumni and friends who had the opportunity to reminisce and talk about the School’s past.
Mr Theodorou’s grandfather, fondly known as Mr Theocharis, was employed at the School from 1936 until his retirement in 1967. He worked as a night watchman, a handyman and messenger and could be seen riding his bicycle on his various errands around the School. For the first few years, he lived with his wife Mrs Eleni, who also worked at the School for a while, in what is now the Radio Club.
Mr Doros Theodorou’s father, Yiannakis, was a student at our School from 1950 to 1956 and is remembered by his classmates for his admirable character and for excelling in athletics. Unfortunately, Mr Theocharis passed away in 1967 and Mr Yiannakis Theodorou in 2018 but both are remembered fondly by all those who knew them.
We thank Mr Theodorou for his initiative in bringing the School’s past into the present, and we also thank him for his generous support of our School for which the English School family is most grateful.
