A remarkable participation of Cyprus at the 13th International Geography Olympiad held in Beijing!

Cyprus was extremely successful in its first time participation in the 13th International Geography Olympiad  held in Beijing from 16th to 22nd August 2016 with two silver medals and a bronze ranking Cyprus in the 13th place worldwide amongst 46 countries and 176 participants. It is worth noting that all three students who excelled are students of The English School, Nicosia.

The delegation of Cyprus was composed of four students, three from The English School and one from the Grammar School.   The students were accompanied by Mr. Harutiun Boyadjian Head of Geography Department and The English School and Mr. Mario Pavlou, Head of Geography at the Grammar School.

The distinguished students are:

  • Constantinos Lordos, The English School, Silver medal
  • Savvas Markou, The English School, Silver medal
  • Orestes Michaelides, English School, Bronze medal

Firstly, we should thank Mrs. M, Nicholson (the chairperson of the previous Board) who personally initiated the ES   participation in the the pan Cyprian competition and committed the school`s financial assistance and support. The success the students achieved in at the iGEO vindicated her trust and support.  Secondly, the school and participants would like to thank Mr. Panayiotis Argyrides of the Cyprus Geographical association who coordinated and made all the practical arrangements and offered support at all stages of the event.
Special thanks should also go to the iGeo organizers and the host country China. They were amazing hosts and the entire week proved to be an unforgettable experience for all involved but especially the talented upcoming Geography students.

The International Geographical Olympiad is an annual competition for the best geography students from around the world, aged 16 to 19 years.  Students are selected to represent their country, through a similar competition held locally in their countries.   The same happened in Cyprus.

Students who represented Cyprus at the 13th International Olympiad, were selected by the Cyprus Geography Contest held in Nicosia in February 2016. The International Geographical Olympiad Competition consisted of three parts: a written test, a multimedia test and an outdoor exercise doing cartographic and geographic analysis. The program also included a presentation of posters by the participants on "Sustainable Cities", tour and performance by all participants
