Our Religious Education teacher, Dr Panayiotis Thomas has published a book.

Dr Panayiotis Thomas has been teaching at The English School since 2012. He studied Theology at the Theology Department of the Aristotelean University of Thessaloniki and at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (Brookline, MA, USA), from where he obtained his Master’s Degree; at the same time, he was attending courses on the contextual theology of North America at Boston College. He completed his studies with a PhD in Dogmatic Theology, obtained at the University of Thessaloniki in 2010.

While he has had many articles published, and presents papers at academic conferences, this is his first monograph. It discusses the importance of place, and particularly homeplace in the literary works of Nikos Gabriel Pentzikis, a modernist author from Thessaloniki (1908-1993), and Wendell Berry, a poet, novelist and essayist of Kentucky, USA (born 1934). It is therefore a comparative analysis of the views of these two authors on place and ultimately the theological significance that it may have. Within this context the book examines other relative concepts, specifically that of community, the affection for homeland, ''other-place'' and the place of the afterlife in the works of the aforementioned writers.

Dr Thomas’ book contributes to the ongoing dialogue between literature and theology which takes place mainly in various academic departments in Europe and the USA as it is itself a revised and edited version of his PhD thesis. This is also the first published study about Wendell Berry in Greek language.

Congratulations! We look forward to read it!
