Two 14-year-old girls Maria Constantinou (Nicosia, our student) and Semra Aksu from Smyrni joined forces and won the European Tennis Championship Kalovelonis 2017 Competition, category Girls Doubles U14, held in Pefki, Athens between 3rd to 9th April, writing their own history.

These two young tennis players registered to take part in the doubles girls U14 at the last moment.  After they registered, they became better acquainted on the courts of the Tennis Academy of Kalovelonis, where they played in total sink, despite that they played for the first time together.  They recorded constant wins thus reaching the finals. During the finals they won the Italian Female team: Chiara Alesiani and Letizia Corsini 6-1 and 6-3, where the two girls met a few minutes before the match.

The Cyprus Tennis Federation president, Mr. Filios Christodoulou said: “Once again I want to emphasize that sport unites, regardless of nationality, religion or territory disputes”.

Maria Constantinou said that “her happiness is double, because they managed to win the European title and also she had the opportunity to honour her country.  This was also an amazing win as the title was gained along-side an athlete from Turkey”.  The girls’ success was posted on the website of the Turkish Tennis Federation and has gained numerous comments in social media.

Meanwhile, during the same competition in the Single Boys category, Vangelis Kypriotis (Greek National) was announced the winner after defeating in the finals Sean Cuenin from France 6-2, 4-6, 7-5
