THE ENGLISH SCHOOL MA GA ZINE 2021
THIS HAS BEEN A COUPLE OF YEARS UNLIKE ANY OTHER. IT IS IN THE MIST
OF CHANGE AND UNCERTAINTY THAT REALITY SEEMS TO FOLLOW WHERE
FICTION HAS LED BEFORE. MARQUEZ’S ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF
SOLITUDE WAS A FITTING RE-READ. AMONGST THE MANY WONDERFUL
AND COMPLICATED THEMES OF THE BOOK, IT IS PARTLY A STORY ABOUT A
WORLD INVENTED OUT OF PERCEPTION WITHIN A LONG, GENERATIONAL
CHRONOLOGY OF PROGRESS.
NEW PERSPECTIVES,
NEW PERCEPTIONS Assistant Head
Maria Rousou
Take for example this passage: It rained for four years, eleven
months, and two days. There were periods of drizzle during which
everyone put on his full dress and convalescent look to celebrate the
clearing, but people soon grew accustomed to interpret the pauses
as a sign of redoubled rain.
This is probably what we felt last year. World-wide lock down
brought the cancellation of that which we were all so sure: students
would write exams. But perceptions change and, just as Marquez’s
characters, our students did not simply wait for the rain to stop or
allow progress to stall. Much like these fictional counterparts, our
students contemplated the rain, worked in it, and made plans for the
things that would be done when the clouds cleared.
You have responded resoundingly well to all the changes brought
before you, giving a new perception to reality of their school life. You
have worked hard during this entire period, adapting once again to
online lessons, securing the skills of studious studying, preparing for
exams and making plans. You have sought refuge in each other, you
have collaborated and contributed in new ways. You have become more
resilient and open to change, seeing new perspectives and owning new
perceptions. The clouds will clear, as they do. Much like the theme of
this year’s school magazine, you enter into a brave new world able
to weather its wonders, taking pride in your personal progress.

By the age of 16, you have to know what you
want to become and need to have your whole life
planned. At 18 right now, it all seems okay. The
hard work I put into my art and school is paying
off by taking me to study architecture at my dream
school. If anything, I hope this can be a reminder
to all the stressed English School students out
there to trust the process and keep going!
