Description:
The Debating Society at the English School has over the last 25 years or so made huge strides in promoting public speaking as a serious discipline both at the School and in Cyprus. We have taken part in the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Tournament since 1991 (normally held in Canada and the USA), winning categories in Persuasive Speaking, After-dinner Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu, and Dramatic Interpretation. We have also been firm supporters of the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship, travelling to the UK, USA, Argentina, South Africa, Hong Kong and Australia. The English School is a founder member of this competition and hosted in 1995, 2000 and 2005 with great success. This year the competition was held in Pittsburgh, USA and 8 students represented the English School, and Cyprus. Further details can be found at WIDPSC.org. Years 4 to 7 participate in competitions in Debating held over the Autumn and Spring Terms. Finals take place in February to determine which students will represent the school in international competition, next year in Sydney, Australia (April 7-13, 2017).

Announcements:
The debate club is looking for volunteers from its current members, to participate in an impromptu debate this Friday at 2:00.
Participants will be given a motion and they will have 40 minutes to prepare for the debate.
This is the procedure followed in all International Championships (WIDPSC) therefore we strongly advice anyone who is interested in participating in this year's WIDPSC to attempt this.
Participants will not be judged or given a grade, it is only for practise purposes. In case we do not have enough volunteers for a debate the volunteers will attempt to do an impromptu.
