Art & Design - Introduction

What's it all about ...

Art is a natural form of expression.

Yet Art is also a separate learning subject consisting of content and skill development.

A curriculum cohort related to other literary and Performing Arts as well as to interdisciplinary integrated studies.

Is an arena for creative problem solving and thinking.

Involves new ideas, invention, originality, unexpected responses, independence, discovery, experimentation, open attitudes, interaction of ideas, imagination, flexibility, self-expression, personal imagery, conceptualisation of ideas, risk taking, trial and error, seeing similarities and differences, self-evaluation, making choices and decisions and
justifying these decisions.

Art stresses sensory experiencing and increases perception.

Art practice helps develop each individual's unique potential through creative behaviour, art production and aesthetic responses.

Art increases a fluent visual vocabulary.

The pupil develops attitudes of appreciation and self-worth, joy in the creation of artworks and in the works of other students and artists.

Art problem solving assists pupils in appreciating the needs and feelings of others in working independently as well as cooperatively.

Art is a study of history and cultures. It is a way to appreciate differences.

Art is a way to study today's society, how art functions in society and how it is an integral part of life.

Art learning includes knowledge of specific processes and techniques in; art movements, artists and their works and forms and styles in art.

Art develops an aesthetic literacy about the why and what of art; What is good? Why? What is beautiful? Why?

Art provides active feedback through discussion and responses to art, as well as opportunities to make informed judgements and to justify such decisions.

Art is a humanising endeavour; it is self-fulfilling, gratifying, a lifelong attitude and search (there is always something new to learn). Knowledge about art can be applied to all aspects of life, from living choices (architecture, interiors, clothing etc.) to art and society.

Art learning informs us about art careers and resources within the community.

It encourages us to become artists and appreciators.
