Maths in Years 1 to 5

In the first and second years pupils follow a general course in Mathematics. The textbooks that have been used up to now were the ST(P) Mathematics 7A, 8A and 9A. The books that will be used now will be the new maths frameworking. These books aim to prepare pupils for the IGCSE course and cover all of Level 5, most of Level 6 and about half of Level 7 at Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum (UK) and they are implementing ICT in the curriculum.

In the third year pupils begin the IGCSE course using the textbook "Longman Mathematics for IGCSE Book 1".  In the fourth year, they continue with 'Longman Mathematics for IGCSE Book 2'. These textbooks aim to prepare pupils for the higher tier of the IGCSE course and cover key stage 4 of the National Curriculum (UK). The examination is taken through Edexcel, the Examination Board of the University of London.

At the end of the fourth year pupils take the higher tier of the IGCSE examination which is targeted at grades A* to D.
The IGCSE examination consists of two external written examination papers of equal weight.
Pupils will be expected to have access to a suitable scientific calculator for both examination papers.

The IGCSE course covers the following areas of Mathematics:

  • Using and Applying Mathematics
  •  Number and Algebra
  •  Shape, Space and Measure
  •  Handling Data.
Pupils are encouraged to use mental calculation wherever appropriate but are also taught how to use calculators when dealing with problems involving more complex calculations.
In the 5th Year, all pupils start an Advanced Level Course in Mathematics.  They follow a  "Single A- Level"  or a  "1½  A- Level"  Course.  If they choose to continue up to the 7th Year with Mathematics they will complete one A-Level or  1½  A- Levels or 2 A-Levels.
The "1½  A- Level" and 2 A-Levels Courses are designed for pupils who are mathematically minded and have a genuine interest in Mathematics.  These pupils are expected to work at a fast pace.  Any pupil who plans to follow this course should do his/her utmost during the IGCSE course in order to have a sound foundation for the Advanced Level Course.

The Mathematics Department offers the opportunity to all pupils to choose between the various Courses shortly before the end of the 4th Year.  Once the pupils make their choice they are not allowed to change from one Course to the other, unless the Mathematics Department recommends that it is to their advantage to work at a faster or slower pace.
