Economics Society

Meetings: Every two weeks
Venue: Economics room, Lecture Theatre, Hall
Teacher in charge: Mrs Popi Grouta

A committee is elected every September, which, together with the teacher in charge, plan a series of events to be held during the year. The Society organises lectures and debates on a number of issues, both of an economic and political nature.  Very often debates organized focus on the Cyprus question, since students express a keen interest on this topic.  For example, a number of discussions were organized on the Annan plan and the referendum as well as other issues which the students found interesting and which were related to our accession to the European Union (such as the common currency) . More recently, we organized a panel discussion on the last presidential elections (February 2008) presenting views from all sides.

The Society also organises a yearly trip to Akamas, (see photos below), usually in cooperation with the Environmental Society, where students get the chance to visit this beautiful area and walk along some of its most interesting paths. Students also usually attend a lecture given by environmentalists on issues concerning the area.

All events organised by the Society are considered challenging and aim at stimulating economic and political awareness.
