Economics Introduction
The ethos and aims of the Department
The Department currently employs five full-time and two part-time teachers. Although it used to be a relatively small Department, it has been growing steadily over the last few years as both subjects in the Department have become more and more popular 'A' Level choices. Consequently, the number of teachers employed has increased.
The Department prides itself in the achievement of excellent IGCSE and 'A' level results.
It attracts a wide range of students including those from a high-ability to average-ability range. This makes the teaching that much more challenging as it must cater for the needs of mixed-ability students. Over the years, the Department has attracted increasing numbers of students who enjoy the challenges of the subjects offered and who mainly go on to pursue undergraduate study in Economics, Management or other Business-related fields. Some of our Economics students even pursue degrees in Physics, Biology and Engineering.
Apart from academic excellence, the Department also aims at promoting a multicultural learning environment both within the Department and the school in general. It is the firm belief of the Department that such an environment enhances learning, builds up students’ self-esteem and encourages all to develop respectful behaviour towards others. The Department takes a firm stand against racist or discriminatory attitudes. At the same time, the Department has a zero-tolerance policy towards graffiti and the use of extreme symbols which may trigger racist incidents.
The Department has its own office, which is used as a resource centre and study area for members of the Department. The Department is well-resourced with a wide variety of modern textbooks, periodicals and videos which teachers are encouraged to use. It subscribes regularly to the Business Review, the Economic Review, Economics Today, The Economist and other leading and projectors periodicals. In addition, we have computers both in the office, for teacher use, and in the Departmental teaching rooms which are used for classroom teaching and holding seminars. An interactive white board is also used in room 16.
