Music Department - Introduction

The English School has a strong musical tradition and music plays an important part in its life. The Department, now housed in a suite of four rooms and soon to have its own purpose-built center, is an active, happy place where musical talent thrives under the direction of two academic staff and two afternoon tutors of string and wind instruments, the tutor of string instruments also being in charge of the school orchestra. Wind and string instrumental tutoring is done on a scholarship basis. The students are normally chosen from the groups of 12 and 13 year olds. At the end of their second year of tuition and sometimes even earlier, they are usually able to join the school orchestra.

There is a wide variety of musical activity throughout the school and everyone is encouraged to take part. The school has two choirs, a symphonic orchestra, various instrumental ensembles and various pop and rock bands.

The Music and Drama departments have worked in the past to produce musicals such as 'Oliver' and the Music Department often provides the music for Shakespearean plays, the last one being 'Twelfth Night'.
Most recently, the Junior Choir performed 'Clowns' by Craig Cassils and the Senior Choir performed 'Joseph' by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

There are ample opportunities for performance and everyone has the chance to gain experience of performing in formal events such as the ever popular Talent Night and in the many informal concerts and recitals of the school.

The Music Department has produced exceptionally talented students who have gone on to become important figures in the world of music and others who have been granted scholarships and are now studying at Universities in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Every possible opportunity is seized at inviting professionals from all over the world to hold workshops in the school, the most recent one being David Campbell, the world- renowned clarinetist.
