News & Events

The set music events for the year are as follows:

COMMEMORATIONS

There are two Commemorations during the Academic Year:
  1. The 28th October which is the first of the Academic Year
  2. The 25th March
The Music Department is normally requested to participate. The teacher in charge of the Department together with the teacher in charge of the Commemoration, the teacher in charge of the choir and the students choose the appropriate songs for the occasion.
The ceremony takes place in the morning, during school hours at a special Assembly. The programme includes speeches (normally there is a guest speaker), a historical review of the occasion, the reciting of poems and the songs sung by the choir.

FOUNDER'S DAY - November

This day celebrates the founding of the School and its Founder and is marked by special events:
  • In the morning, during school hours, there is a special Assembly during which is given a historical review of the School from its founding to the present day. This is normally delivered by a guest speaker who has some relationship with the School. The choir participates by singing the School Song and some other appropriate song such as a hymn.
  • After the ceremony in the School Hall, there is usually a tree-planting ceremony at some location on the School grounds.

TALENT NIGHT - November

Talent Night was introduced into the schedule of formal concerts of the English School in 1995 and was a concert created to give all the students in the School the chance to show what they can do in terms of music (any kind), drama, poetry, dance and any other form of self-expression. This is not possible with the traditional Christmas and Spring Concerts.

THE CHRISTMAS CONCERT - December

The Christmas Concert is a very important concert for Students, Teachers and Parents alike. It takes place on the last two evenings of the autumn term and plays an important role in creating the Christmas feeling throughout the School.
Every year the theme of the concert is different. In the past we have had 'Scrooge' as a pantomime with dance, a play written by an ex-student, 'Carols by Candlelight' and many others.
The E.S. Christmas concert has become very popular with the public and various organizations invite the E.S. choir to give a performance either at their own establishment or downtown.

'JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING MULTI-COLOURED COAT'

Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical was performed by the senior choir in February of this year and was a resounding success.

THE SPRING CONCERT - April

This is the last formal Concert of the year and takes place at the end of the Spring term.
Once again, a particular theme is chosen. Last year, the theme was 'The versatile English School choir' and it aimed at showing how the choir could perform music from a variety of periods and in a variety of styles. This year the theme is 'Thank you for the music'.

OTHER EVENTS

The choir and orchestra of the English School are sometimes invited to participate in festivals and workshops. These are of great value to students and teachers alike.
In the past few years the choir participated in the EMAC Senior Fine Arts Festival held in Cyprus at the American International School and last year the choir was invited to join the AUB All Lebanon Choral Classic Workshop. Unfortunately the trip to Lebanon had to be cancelled because of the war in Iraq.
The School had also been invited to participate in a project under test by the European Union involving students between the ages of 15 and 19 who play woodwind or brass instruments. The workshop had taken place in Italy.
In the past, the Music Department has organized Taverna Nights. In this way the audience is given the chance to participate in the singing and even to dance to the music.
A similar event will take place next year in May under the title 'Unforgettable Melodies'
