Effective Teaching & Learning

Effective teaching gives due attention to subject content, but additionally engages and motivates pupils to pursue scientific thinking by:
  • combining clear explanation with questioning to develop pupils' own thinking
  • extends the application of scientific ideas to human, industrial and environmental situations
  • includes good variety of linked activities, including purposeful laboratory practical work
  • plans opportunities for the development of the skills of scientific enquiry
  • finds ways of encouraging more open discussion

The strategy adopted and used by the department is based on the following principles:
  • good pupil-teacher relationships
  • well-planned syllabus material and sound lesson preparation
  • enthusiastic, logical delivery of material
  • good feedback both in the lesson and through prompt and careful marking of homework, tests and coursework

Every effort should be made to involve every pupil in lessons, stretching the most able while at the same time ensuring the less able do their best and do not lose confidence. The teacher should try to help pupils achieve learning through their preferred learning style.

It must be remembered that for powerful learning one should:
  • integrate prior and new knowledge
  • acquire and use a range of learning skills
  • solve problems individually and in groups
  • think carefully about their successes and failures
  • evaluate conflicting evidence and  think critically
  • accept that learning involves uncertainty and difficulty
