Biology - Introduction

Why Study Biology?

Biology is the scientific study of living things and how our knowledge can be used for the benefit of humankind. A biological education aids an understanding of problems and issues such as genetic modification, human influence on the environment, public health, the use of biology in industry, etc.
The scientific training that the subject offers aids the development of clear, logical thought and of a critical approach to evidence. A further  bonus is the insight Biology offers into the beauty of Nature, and into human nature itself. In this respect the subject is unique - it is useful for those aspiring to study Medicine, Veterinary Science, Psychology, Dietetics, Environmental Biology, Marine Biology, Biomedical Science, Genetics, just to mention a few higher education courses related to Biology.

After the introduction of basic Biology taught in the Science lesson in Years 1-3, students can opt for IGCSE Biology in Years 4-5. Normally there are about 80 to 90 students doing IGCSE Biology.

Successful and interested students then have the option of A-Level Biology. In recent years the numbers have been ranging from 45 to 55.
