Fieldtrip to Switzerland

Reasons for an overseas fieldtrip

IGCSE courses place a heavy emphasis on fieldwork. Students need to learn a wide variety of fieldwork techniques best learnt from practical experience. The alternative to coursework exam is wholly based on a sound knowledge of these techniques.
Switzerland and the Alps offer a wholly new experience for many of our students. An environment that many of them are unfamiliar with and it would open their eyes to one of the natural wonders of the world Study centres in Switzerland offer an opportunity to cover a large number of topics from a wide range of the three core themes of the syllabus.
Theme one: Human geography will be looked at by studies of settlement and urbanisation.
Theme two: Physical geography will be looked at by studies of glaciers, climate, rivers and ecosystems.
Theme three: Economic geography will be looked at by studies of hydro electric power, agriculture and alpine tourism.
Students learn a wide range of practical skills while investigating these areas of the syllabus as well as gaining valuable knowledge of case studies applicable both in other IGCSE papers and at higher levels of study.
The topic of glaciers studied at both IGCSE and A level would become much easier for students to appreciate through practical experience.
The study centre will provide a qualified geography teacher with detailed local knowledge to lead the courses. In addition to this extra study materials will be made available to the department from the tour operators allowing students to be prepared with detailed background knowledge before the trip begins.
It would allow Cypriot students to gain familiarity with another area of Europe as European Integration continues.
